Caring for silk & satin: How to keep clothes in good condition

When you spend your hard-earned money on clothes, you expect them to have a decent lifespan. However, certain items of clothing seem to deteriorate much faster than others, even though you’ve taken good care of them. Silk and satin always look stunning, but caring for them in the right way can be nuanced if you want your clothing to stay spellbinding.

Without the proper know-how, you might not be keeping your clothing in the best condition possible. Read our helpful guide to learn how to keep your clothes in good condition, as well as how to correctly wash a silk dress.

How to keep clothes in good condition

On average, clothing typically lasts for just over two years. Therefore, if you want to get the most out of your garments, keep these tips in mind. At NADINE MERABI, we carefully and beautifully handcraft all of our clothes, so we want you to maintain your clothes in the way they deserve to be kept.

Here is our best advice on how to keep clothes in good condition:

  • Wash less - Try not to wash your clothes if it isn’t completely necessary. Quite often, a piece of clothing probably doesn’t need to be washed. So just check the next time you go to throw that item in the laundry basket.
  • Wash at lower temperatures - Not only will this tip help you save on your energy bills but if you wash your clothes at a lower temperature, it will prolong the life of your clothes.
  • Pay attention to care labels - All items of clothing have a care label with instructions on how to wash and dry them. Pay attention to properly care for them.
  • Use eco-friendly detergent - Using eco-friendly detergents is not only good for the environment but they’re also friendly on materials, keeping them in good condition.
  • Wash inside out - Washing clothes inside out can avoid any slight damage to their fiber.
  • Store properly - Don’t leave your clothes unorganized as this will encourage creasing. Fold them properly and put them away, so they don’t get damaged. Also, if you can, hang them up in a wardrobe.

How to hang long dresses

Long dresses can typically be difficult to hang in your wardrobe as they tend to sag and collect at the bottom. There is a way to beat that, though. With two hangers, simply drape the skirt portion over the head of the second hanger to prevent it from collecting at the bottom of your cupboard. This not only keeps your wardrobe looking tidier but also helps the dress to last longer!

How to steam a dress

Instead of ironing a wrinkled dress, try to steam it instead if you own the right kit. This helps to preserve the lifespan of the garment and is much easier than you may think.

First of all, you need to hang the dress up. Using a handheld steamer that’s filled with water, pull the dress taut and steam section by section slowly and carefully. Tackle heavy wrinkles by applying steam directly to them.

If you’re steaming an expensive dress, make sure to use the steamer through a piece of material, so you’re not directly steaming the dress.

How to wash a silk dress

With silk being such a delicate material, it’s important to wash and care for it in just the right way to ensure it stays in peak condition for a long time to come.

If you’re wondering exactly how to wash a silk dress, we usually recommend washing it by hand in a small tub or clean sink. Use delicate-friendly liquid detergent as some other detergents may tamper with the silk’s condition. Lightly wash for around four minutes and thoroughly rinse the detergent out with cold water.

If you do use a washing machine, only choose this option if the clothing’s label says you can and wash on a cold-water cycle.

Our gorgeous DARCIE red pajamas are designed with a luxurious silk-satin blend, so follow these steps carefully to keep them looking spectacular.

How to wash a satin dress

Similarly to silk, your satin clothing is sure to stay in good condition if you treat it delicately when washing. As before, wash your satin dress by hand in a small tub for the safest method of washing.

Ensure the detergent you use is safe to use on delicate materials. Lightly agitate the water to ensure the soap correctly soaks into the dress and leave it to soak for up to half an hour.

Make sure you thoroughly rinse the soap out of the dress after this duration using cold water. As satin is easily disturbed, gently press the water out of the clothing and continue to handle the dress gently.

How to iron a silk dress

Silk must be slightly wet when you iron it, so you don’t damage the material. Keep a spray bottle handy and lightly cover the garment in water to ensure dampness. Use a low heat setting on the iron but do not iron directly onto the silk.

Instead, use a pillowcase, cloth, or handkerchief in between the iron and the item of clothing. Gently iron out creases.

How to iron a satin dress

When ironing a satin dress, be just as careful as you would with silk. Turn the item inside out, lower the heat of the iron to the lowest temperature and move it quickly across the material without applying too much pressure. Once you’ve finished ironing, hang up the silk dress and close any zips or buttons.

Available in a wide variety of colors, our DARCIE pink pajamas are made using our beautifully designed satin. Be sure to keep this advice in mind when caring for your pair.
